The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, have launched nationwide birth registration social mobilization drive.
The Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onillu, disclosed this Wednesday at the press briefing organised at the Federal Secretariat Jos, the Plateau State capital.




Represented by the Director, Special Duties and States Operations, David Akoji, the DG disclosed that the drive was aimed to ensuring that every child in Nigeria has access to essential services like education, healthcare and social protection.
“We are focusing on registering all children aged 0-5 years and providing them with a National Identification Number (NIN) free of charge.The birth registration drive, which started in August, will run until November 2024.



“Birth registration is a fundamental right of every child, and this initiative highlights its importance to the child, family, community and nation.
“During this drive, every child aged 0-5 years will receive a NIN upon face capturing and birth registration.Let’s work together to give every child in Nigeria the best start in life”, he noted.




Issa-Onillu, reiterated that accurate birth registration was vital for national planning and development and by registering a child’s birth, families would ensure recognition by the state protection from abuse, exploitation and statelessness.
He, therefore, encouraged parents and guardians to visit the nearest NPC registration center to register their childrena and that, the process would be simple, free and required only supporting documents like immunization card or existing birth certificate.




Earlier, the Plateau State Director of NOA, Mrs Kaneng Tabitha Pam-Hworo, expressed joy the flag off was starting today in Jos, the Plateau State capital with awareness campaign through the press briefing.
“You have to go to register the child now. It’s an effortless thing now. You don’t have to go a long distance to register. “That is why we’re beginning the campaign in Jos today by holding this press conference, for people to know that we are taking it seriously.


“And we hope that we’ll have our due time to be able to campaign. In the local government, it’s going to be a rally and then door-to-door campaign. So please, when you see them in your various localities, our orientation opportunities, we will come together”, she appealed.
The State Director of the National Population Commission (NPC), Mwolpun Felicia James, disclosed that they were in collaboration with the health, education sectors and religious leaders, concerning birth registration.
She assured that, their staff were stationed in all the hospitals and primary health care clinics in the State in order to meet parents or guardians to help them obtain their children’s birth certificates.



On his part, the State Head of Enforcement of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Emmanuel Deme, explained that the commission has taken correction regarding the expiration of NIMC Cards.
He disclosed; “The next set of cards that will come in will not have those expired things. And you’ll be using it except the day you decide to change a letter in your name. That’s when that card will no longer be pushed.
And if you do the modification, then you now produce a new card. The current administration has promised one of the agenda. The agenda is to produce a general model of a cat. And we’re working towards that. I believe, maybe, early next year, 2025. In fact, we made it so easy that you can request your cat for the comfort of your home.

There were goodwill messages from the representative of Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, Da Yakubu Jack Dings, the representatives of the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Ja’amatu Nasir Islam (JNI) as well as others.
