Ngas Village Market:  diversifying cultural and economic reminiscence

Nde Chingdapba Ngop, the Madaki Ballang-Shipang and Chairman, Ngas Village Market Jos
Elders of the Ngas in Jos/Bukuru metropolis inspecting the displayed attires, among whom is Nde Bako Shurkuk, Ngolong Kyan Rikkos

BY EZEKIEL DONTINNA

What started like drops of puddles coalesced into a small stream flowing through a lake-stored water base, later became a confluence of social and cultural display of unity as sons and daughters, and friends of Ngas speaking people trooped in to share in their funs therein the market.

The unusual colour added to this Saturday Ngas Village Market situated along the Jos Museum yesterday, was thrillingly unique as different people and dance  groups pump up the market with music and dance styles coming from some Jos based Artists.

Nde Wokji Gerlong, and family at the Ngas Village Market

What appeared more attractive to mention was the colourful display of  cultural artefacts at both entrance and the market show room . Ngas native costumes and antiques were seen displayed for interested sons and daughters who may wish to patronise.

To note, is the consistency shown in driving this dream behind setting such a historic and first of its kind market here on the Plateau. It wasn’t a catch-22 situation to start with, but an ardent desire that was already a cooked plan that saw the creation of the Ngas Development Association (NDA) in the first place.

Love, unity and prosperity (Rot, Kangkhike dang Metpokin), as been the motto of NDA, was basically to bring them together as one a people, knowing how adventurous they are in nature. It was also to help promote their cultural heritage in the face of this current generational collapse in moral and cultural certitudes.

However, for some among many sons and daughters of Ngasland out there, it is a must embraced idea, because this is an opportunity especially for those who have been in diaspora all through and do not know much about their culture.

Yesterday, one of the Ngas sons who could not hide his show of love and interest for his culture, Nde Wokji Gerlong, took his family to this market and it was quite awesome. He was busy seen taking his family round to see and taste the varieties of Ngas traditional foods displayed at the market.

It was truly more like home coming to the family especially, the little Arrit Gerlong, who was all over dressed in the Ngas cultural attires and dancing, following the beats coming from the local guitar (Diengdieng).

Mr. Nenpan Gerlong, appearing as the Ngas warrior

Expressing her feelings and joy while in an interview with our correspondent at market, Mrs. Nanko Gerlong, who is from the Tarok extraction, but married to Nde Wokji Gerlong, said the visit to the Ngas Village has exposed her to many things saying, “I thought I know somethings about the Ngas people, but this is an eye opener.

“I have seen quite alot and have experienced things that I have not seen. I have seen the people, the culture and how they live especially, where the King stays, how the Ngas man dresses, farms and so many items used in the community.

“Oh, this is excellent! I am quite impressed with what I have seen so far. I was even told that this is just the beginning and that, there is more to come. I pray and hope that they get more support so that, when we come next we will see more of it”, she prayed and hoped.

The immediate past President of the Ngas Development Association (NDA), Nde Gonen Gofwen and friend

Mrs. Gerlong, described the Ngas Village as a great place one needs to visit and experience culture suggesting that, there should be a vernacular department where Ngas language would be taught to sons and daughters especially, those in the diaspora who cannot speak Ngas language.

On his part, Nde Wokji Gerlong, whose root is from Wuselli District in Pankshin LGA of Plateau State, said, “this is my first time of coming to the Ngas Village and it is wonderful. I brought my family to come and experience the Ngas culture and the kids are so excited to see the different aspects of the Ngas culture here.

“This, for me, is a very good foundation. It is going to unite all sons and daughters of Ngasland because it stands as a rallying point for us and I believe Ngas people will be proud of this place and, at any point in time they can come and continue to see the culture at play here”, he enthused.

While expressing concern over the left behind spirit of inculcating values of Ngas in the children, Gerlong, added that, “actually, that is one mistake we have made over the years in not inculcating our culture in our children.

“We have Ngas men in the diaspora, but they have not had any opportunity to learn the language and know or experience this culture as my family is experiencing it today.

“I hope as much as possible and I know that, it is not going to be easy for everybody to learn, but as we modernise, the Ngas Community should develop a form where even those that are away will get the opportunity to experience this”, he suggested .

Nde Wokji Gerlong, however, advocated for a full documentary of the Ngas culture to be circulated on either social media or other platforms so that, it would go a long way in helping even those in the diaspora to experience the rich culture.

Mos-Naza

Meanwhile, the political class were not left out in the yesterday’s Saturday market. The All Progressive Congress (APC)’s Candidate of Kanke Local Government in the forthcoming Council Elections, Nde James Goleng, was at this Ngas Village Market to have a feel of the it as he was walked round amidst crowd.

It was really a population overflow yesterday. People were all over the spaces available for them to sit. The must interesting part of it as always been in the past two months, was the full participations of people from other ethnic nationalities on the Plateau.

Nam-kam
Miss Jana Juryit, (left) attending to her customers

There, one could hardly differentiate who is Ngas and not, which shows that the prediction of a better and united Plateau is certain. In fact, the only means of identifying one was when you pop into people using another tongue.

Truly, it was one united Plateau, with Berom, Mwagavul, Tarok, Gamai, Mupun, Chip, Afizere, Anaguta, Irigwe, Buji, Ron, Kulere, Mushere, Dimak, Bugum, Jar, Ganawuri, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and other nationalities exchanging pleasantries and engaging fully in socioeconomic focus of this market.

Among other shop owners at the this Ngas Village Market, was one Miss Jana Juryit, a POS service business owner, who expressed optimism that the market would surely flourish. She revealed that, the business has been better compared to when she first came.

She disclosed that, “the patronage has been fair because I see more people coming to withdraw as the demand increases time to time. I started with a hundred thousand naira, but today I was able to dispense up to four hundred thousand naira”.

Hon. Goleng, going round to see things for himself

That, on its own, is an indication of the fact that, economic activities is gradually picking up and could keep our youth busy. We pray that this will go a long way in contributing adequately to the peace process of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

NDA President, Nde Katkukkah Danjuma Gokum

This, of course, attest to fact that, the series of complaints and concerns raised by citizens, when the market was suspended due to the unfortunate #EndBadGovernance# protest that later forced the imposement of curfew on Jos/Bukuru metropolis last two weeks, demonstrated how they cherished peace and freedom.

Nde Gerlong, in a complete Ngas attires of a warrior
The Ngolong Ngas, His Majesty, Nde Jika Golit

Appreciably, the mammoth turn out to this market yesterday, was definitely not far-fetched from the total relaxation of curfew by the Executive Governor of Plateau State. A week before last was not as much as the population witnessed yesterday. May achieving peace continue to be our portion!

Comrade Fwengak Daniel Yilbisa, the Plateau State Chairman of JPSNC reading the communique at the press briefing.

Plateau State Chairman of JPSNC, Comrade Fwengak Daniel Yilbisa, raised this concern through a communique issued at the end of JPSNC (Trade Union Side) Congress meeting, held at the NCSU State Secretariat Jos, the Plateau State capital Thursday.

While addressing Journalists at the press briefing, sensing actions by some individuals and groups to hijack their responsibility, the Chairman said, “the JPSNC is compelled to address the recent actions of some individuals and groups, which have been attempting to interfere with our internal affairs.

“This, to our knowledge is deliberately tried to undermine the operation of the JPSNC, which could compromise its
effectiveness and independence. We categorically reject any attempts by some individuals or groups to dictate
our decisions, influence our leadership, or disrupt our operations.

“Our organization is committed to its objectives and values, and we will not be
swayed by external forces seeking to advance their own interests. We believe in the importance of collaboration and cooperation, but also recognize the need for organizations to maintain their independence and self-
determination”, he cautioned.

Yilbisa, however, urged those concerns to respect the boundaries and focus on their own goals and objectives and that, the JPSNC leadership were proud of their accomplishments and the trust bestowed in them by their members.
He described the Joint Council as a vital platform for collective bargaining, dispute resolution and a promoting unit for industrial harmony, because its independence and impartiality
were crucial to building trust and confidence among members.
The JPSNC Chairman, therefore, appeal to the government to safeguard the integrity of the Joint Council and
allow it to operate without undue influence or interference.

Meanwhile, he has commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang, for appointing a new Head of Civil Service without delay to guarantee a smooth flow of activities and duties left by the retiring Head of Civil Service towards the development of Plateau State.
While congratulating the newly appointed Head of Civil Service, Yilbisa, appealed to the number one Civil Servant in the state to not allowed himself to be misled by these groups, whom he described as marauders that have been doing same in the past, and should be mindful of the current administrative style within the office.

Farmers/Herders conflicts: YIAVHA renews confidence, builds bridges via socioeconomic integration

Mr. Pwakim Jacob Choji, the Executive Director of YIAVHA

BY EZEKIEL DONTINNA

The mystery of putting an end to any disagreement or conflict that long existed in a broken society, is not always achieved by using one way approach. It goes with a purified exclusive hindsight that understands multidimensional approach to issues like that.

Although, it could logically be easy to say that, what looks obvious in hindsight can not be all obvious at some point, but the Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse (YIAVHA), decided to dwell on the critical quest for peaceful cohesion looking  at it from a different perspective that sees peace as a priceless commodity.

Pictures of farmers and herders in Riyom LGA farming together

Over the years, so much emphasises have been on the psychological and structural aspects of addressing conflicts on the Plateau. Series of peace workshops and seminars were organised by Governments and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), but a mechanism for a genuine and practical cohesion was somehow lacking.

This could possibly, be why there still  existed some no go areas in communities around Riyom, Barkin-ladi and other crisis ravaged local government areas in the state.

The beauty of teamwork and peaceful cohesion

Despite efforts by Federal, State, Local Government, CSOs as well as International Communities investing  heavily in this peace process, people still hold to the fears of the unknown, because practical applications were not reached.

However, YIAVHA, having seen and been part of the peace process over the years, decided to diversified its approach and went into what the organisation tagged: “Building Bridges for Peace”, a Community-Based Participatory Action Research to Promote Socio Economic Integration and Cohesion to Farmer/Herders Conflicts”.

YIAVHA engages youth who are the driving force of these conflicts

Findings revealed that, the project is funded by Knowledge Platform, Security and Rule of law. We further found out that, the objective of the project is to Promote Socio Economic Integration and Cohesion in Farmer/Herders Conflicts” in 8 communities of Riyom Local government, Plateau state.,

Towards cementing this years of bloody fracas that succeeded in hampering their long existed cohesion before recent, the Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Right Abuse (YIAVHA), deliberately came up with a reunion mechanism where farmers and herders came together to foster unity among themselves.

The erring communities now in a group photograph

Interestingly, this Civil Society Organisation, had earlier this farming season brought both Fulanis herders and the farming Berom communities together through its Joint Farming Initiatives Programme to cultivate over five (5) different lands.

According to the Executive Director of YIAVHA, Mr. Jacob Choji Pwakim, “the initiative was to go beyond just dialogues that create understanding, but  also see how these dialogues open the doors for cooperation, Peace, safety for each other, social cohesion, collaboration, and economic prosperity.

“So, we deliberately designed the project to have joint activities like systems thinking workshop, community action research, joint farming, intergenerational storytelling, exchange visits across communities that have been at loggerheads. We factored young people at the centre of the intervention while leveraging on local power structures that statutorily influence the state of peace or violence in their communities”.

“The reasons for this Initiative is one, we have seen that blood baths in Plateau have undignified every living soul of these lands, making old friends to become arch enemies. Both the farmers and herders were not free to use those lands because they were scared of the cattles and crops being killed or destroyed”, he explained."So, we felt that if we are able to bring them together where they could be able to enter

“So, we felt that if we are able to bring them together where they could be able to enter each others’ communities freely and dialogue, it will be a great achievement. Fortunately, they all agreed on measures that would stop any further disagreement or conflict and both were very happy and truly, it was demonstrated.

“We decided to pair those erring communities together to see if those fears that existed or that people held in time past are real or just an imaginations and see to what truly brought this sudden change.

“We wanted to know if they are still holding to the fears of the past which has made them to see each other as enemies? These fears were across board so, we joined Rim and Jenda, Sas and Kwi, Mahanga and Jol with Riyen and Bangai respectively to farm together this year.

“With this, they have realised that the existing relationship between the farmers and herders is a symbiotic one now and they were able to agree that criminality will not be tolerated anymore. They were ready to deal with any criminal activity within them and it was awesome”, he disclosed.

Pwakim, explained further that,  the above listed communities for years, hardly relate because they still see each other as sheer enemies and believed that nothing could ever bring them together again, but the unexpected happened when they came with this Initiative.

It was for this reasons that YIAVHA took it up and decided to infuse what is called: “System Thinking Workshop” after identifying communities, mapping stakeholders and perspectives around the conflict communities.

Both farmers and herders later come to terms with reality and realised that they were reasons behind the escalation of all the conflicts because they failed to fight the common enemy that had succeeded in placing them at logger heads all these while.

The intention was for the erring communities or parties to value each other and what they have to make a living out of. This, according to findings revealed that, it was the first of its kind in the country, a situation where farmers and herders would agree to cultivate land together and grow crops.

One mind blowing issue to note with this initiative is the fact that, these people agreed to sell the crops at the end of this farming season when harvested and share the money among themselves, but a percentage as initiated by YIAVHA, would be reserved to enable them farm the coming season.

The Executive Director, therefore, expressed optimism that, this singular act has really renewed confidence among these communities and were always seen meeting to farm as a team as family and they are all celebrating the reunion.

One of the greatest achievement of YIAVHA, was the engagement of youth in the dialogue which most time, people do not respect as key players in conflict resolution. It is quite unfortunate that, workshops and seminars are always at the advantage of the elders who do not go out.

The organisation has also planned to reach out to other conflict affected areas like Bassa, Mangu, Barkin-ladi and Bokkos Local Government Areas to see that this renewed relationship and confidence can be realised in these communities.
