Ngas Village market witnesses massive turn out yesterday

The Committee Chairman, Ngas Village Jos, Nde Chingdapba Ngop, the Madaki Ballang-Shipang

 BY EZEKIEL DONTINNA

The speed at which the Ngas Village market around Jos Museum, Plateau State, moves week by week is becoming unprecedented and interestingly admissible to bring back the old Plateau.

One of the Jep-Rit Mwa asking ancestors to bless the market day

It clearly demonstrated how eager Plateau people yearn for this sincere cohesion that would make them have a feel of the throw back historical practice of their forefathers.

The Ngas ethnic nationality decided to take a lead in bringing back those old good days where traditions and customs are highly appreciated or respected through such cultural avenues.

For younger ones who never set their eyes on these beautiful architectural traditional buildings, it is an opportunity for them to see how their ancestors used to live and begin to appreciate how nature has transformed itself into who they are today.

The Committee Chairman, Chingdapba Ngop flagging the planting of Olive tree at the market

It also tells how this rich cultural heritage of the Plateau people interwoven, depicting the reason for their old ancestral exodus to settle here on the Plateau from a distant land.

No wonder, the Ngas Village market yesterday, gradually became a multiethnic cultural market with other friends from other ethnic nationalities like Gamai, Afizere, Berom, Irigwe, Tarok, Mwagavul, Igbos and many more were in attendance.

Unlike the previous market days where appreciable numbers of people trooped in, yesterday’s turn out was high especially with people who are friends of Ngas speaking people coming to enjoy with them.

Some came as far as Abuja and other States to witness this market which happened to be the first of its kind in the State. Apart from enjoying just the traditional dishes and drinks, many preferred to have snapshots using the beautiful architecturally designed traditional structures as their background.

In fact,  it was quite thrilling and exciting as people were seen singing and dancing the Ngas musics shops owners played to attract their customers. The most interesting part of it was how peaceful the market was.

The fun in it all and the show of interests and attractions to this new innovation, saw many who came in not minding the comfort of having a good seat, but preferred to sit on the rocks just as been the practice in old days.

Nenzar, who sells Mun-kas rushed to serve her customers

Although, the Ngas people were known for living in a topographically rocky and mountainous areas. To these young ones, it was replica of the ancient days for them to feel and know how their ancestors coped or lived in those days.

The market was really peaceful and entertaining with the traditional security personnel (Jep-Rit Mwa), strategically positioned at different points to monitor and control people who might wish to do funny things within or around the environment.

NDA Chairman of Jos-North LGA, Nde Bitrus Yeka and family

It was glaringly seen in the faces of these market men and women who came to sell in there that, “yes, we have good market today”. For those who tried selling honey and olive oil, the marketing mix was affordably attracted to many, but the quantity was not much.

The Management Committee led by the Chairman, Nde Chingdapba Ngop, as flagged by the Secretary, Nde Francis Kopdimma, were present with the NDA Chairman of Jos-North Local Government Area, Nde Bitrus Yeka, in attendance.

The highlight of the market day, was the planting of the ancestral economy tree, Ting-Pet (Olive tree) by the Nde Chingdapba Ngop. Some new sites were also demarcated to intending market men and women.

However, as always been the rule of the market, it was supposed to start by 8am and close 6:30pm, but yesterday’s case was quite different. People were probably carried away by the sweet  traditional dishes and how entertaining it was and wished never to return home.

It took the efforts of the market Committee to keep announcing and forcing them to leave the market premises which they did reluctantly. It is our prayers that this market will unite the Plateau people as always wished.

Use social media handles for development and positive cohesion -Bere

DOPA, Gyang Bere, addressing the youths as was flagged by Director General of PEPSA, Samuel Dapia, and PICTDA Director General, Dominic Datong

The Director of Press and Public Affairs to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Gyang Bere, has implored youths in the state to use their social media handles to project the development stride of the present administration positively instead of throwing baseless falsehood and sentiments.

He stated this yesterday while responding to questions fielded by Journalists on the occasion marking the Plateau Social Media Day celebration observed by Special Advisers and Assistants to the Governor on Media in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

The DOPA said, “there are things we are expected to portray, particularly, the achievement of the current administration. We know what the government has done and we know what the social media can also do to ensure that people within and outside Plateau acquaint themselves with the development efforts of His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang.

“We are expected to also use the social media to ensure that we change the narrative of Plateau State. This government has come to change the narrative of Plateau State and ensure that people are acquainted with what is happening within the state.

“You are aware of the negative narrative on insecurity about Plateau State before the coming of this administration. People believed that Jos is not safe, but people are now coming into Jos to carry out their businesses without any problem”, he disclosed.

Cross session of some Journalists

Bere, however, described Jos as the most peaceful city in the North-Central Nigeria, Northern Nigeria and the entire country Nigeria and called on the social media handles users to tell people that Jos was home for everybody to come and carry out their businesses.

He also exposed the minds of these youths on using the social media handles to create wealth instead propaganda that were detrimental to the peace of the State and development strides of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

On his part, the Director General of the Plateau Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), Dominic Datong, expressed concern that everybody was now a freespace Journalist and could send any information be it verified or unverified.

He said, “any message that you needed to send online, you need to ask yourself this question; is it the truth, is it fair to everybody and would it add to the peace of this city?

“Because, when people do not come to our city, at the end of day we will lack jobs and any positive thing that would have happened in our state. We must be able to use the social media responsibly because information can go farther beyond your expectation.

“The social media connection is so enormous that, one message from a remote village in Kanke can go as far Rwanda or South Africa or America. So, we have to be careful with the use of technology”, Datong advised.

The Director General of Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) Samuel Dapia, who was in solidarity with celebration, described the social media as a powerful tool that he has taken advantage of in carrying out his duties.

Inspite of yesterday’s occasion which coincided with the monthly sanitation, the DG said, “Social Media is very important in the execution of sanitation for us in PEPSA. It has also been very important in promoting environmental hygiene and ideas even in terms of literacy.

“It is also important to the agency because we use social media to promote even ideas on best ways and practices of waste management. It is important because social media is one of the most important tool I have taken advantage of since I became the DG.

“This is because I promote every single activity done or executed by the agency in social media. So, it is a tool that some of us are leveraging on because it is somehow cheaper than the conventional media. So, we use it to meet so many people and I join all other government appointees to celebrate this day”, Dapia highlighted.

The occasion which started with a walk from the Secretariat junction flyover to Otunko-Abbattoir overhead bridge was tagged with a theme: Uniting The Digital Space To Support Governor Mutfwang’s Good Governance Strides And Peace Efforts In Plateau State”.

This, he assured while in continuation of his familiarisation tour to three other Media outfits today in Jos, the State capital, particularly, Unity 93.3 FM, JAY 101.9 FM and Radio Nigeria Highland 101.5FM respectively.

The Chairman said, “the Governor on the day of our inauguration made it clear that PLASIEC is an independent body and if the politicians wants to make their votes count, they should go to the people and prove their popularity and not put pressure on us.

“And that, if anybody wins election under any party, he will not interfere so, it has made our job so easy. Most of the time when you have the appointing authorities putting pressure on SEC, they will be forced to do funny things.
